What is a composite filling?
Composite is a tooth-coloured resin that bonds directly to the tooth. It is shaded to match the tooth being repaired, then shaped and polished so it blends with the surrounding surface. Unlike older silver amalgam, it needs less healthy tooth structure to be removed in order to hold in place.
When a filling is needed
- Decay found at an examination or on an X-ray
- A chipped, cracked or worn tooth
- An old filling that has broken down, leaked or stained at the edges
- Small gaps or shape corrections on front teeth
How it works
We numb the tooth if needed, remove the decayed or damaged portion, and clean the cavity. The composite is placed in layers, each set with a curing light, then shaped to match the tooth’s natural contours and your bite. Most single fillings are completed in one appointment.
Looking after them
Composite fillings are cared for the same way as your natural teeth: brushing twice a day, cleaning between the teeth, and regular check-ups so we can spot any wear at the margins early. How long a filling lasts depends on its size, where it sits in the mouth and how you use your teeth.
