What we look at
A comprehensive examination goes well beyond checking for holes. We assess the condition of every tooth, the health of your gums and the bone supporting them, how your teeth meet when you bite, the jaw joints, and the soft tissues of your mouth, cheeks and tongue.
- Every tooth assessed for decay, wear, cracks and existing restorations
- Gum and bone health, including pocket depths where indicated
- Your bite, jaw joints and any signs of grinding or clenching
- Soft tissues of the mouth, cheeks, tongue and throat
- Existing crowns, fillings, bridges or dentures checked for wear and fit
X-rays and imaging
Some things simply cannot be seen by looking. We take digital X-rays as part of the examination, and a full-mouth OPG where a broader view is useful, so decay between teeth, bone levels and unerupted teeth are all accounted for. Where a case is more complex, 3D CBCT (cone beam) imaging is available on site.
How often is it needed?
For most people an examination and clean every six to twelve months is appropriate. How often you need to come back depends on your own risk factors, your gum health, your diet and your history, and we will tell you what we think is reasonable for you rather than applying a blanket rule.
What happens next
We will talk you through what we found, what needs attention now, what can wait and what is worth keeping an eye on. If treatment is recommended you will get a written plan and an estimate of costs before anything begins, so there are no surprises.
